Határidő {Border/Deadline}

The tragedy of human displacement has garnered much attention in recent says due to the recent Ukrainian refugee crisis. Outside of this event we know that refugees are in movement all over the world with limited support from international communities. In 2015, the world watched as refugees fled war in Syria, Afghanistan, and surrounding countries. People fled to European countries that met them with a mixed response. In this photo series, I had visited the recently closed border of Hungary and Serbia in September of 2015. The Hungarian government had closed the entrance to the Schengen Zone leaving thousands to circumvent another way into Europe. Prior to the closer, the small village of Roske became a flashpoint due its gateway to the EU.

Documenting this location revealed objects left behind after the refugee camps were cleared as well as Hungarian forces actively pushing back those seeking asylum.

The Hungarian word Határidő means ‘border’ but is also the same word used for ‘deadline.’
